On the Net
The internet is a fast and easy way to get information on a number
of topics. We have included some sites that could be useful to you or
someone you know.
Understanding Computers
http://www.seniorlink.com.au/
This site describes itself as Australias Favourite Over
50s Website. It promises assistance to people who feel overwhelmed,
frustrated or confused by computers and the internet. Over the course
of six years the site has created a comprehensive guide that teaches
all aspects of computers to seniors. There is a $55 (including GST)
annual membership fee but for those who dont wish to join there
is a free newsletter to subscribe to called the SeniorLink Sentinel
written in plain English and full of useful advice and handy hints.
There are also many links to health, travel, accommodation and money
sites.
Cryonics
www.merkle.com/cryo
This website gives a clear and concise overview on the issue of Cryonics.
It discusses how cryonics works, explaining that the notion of ‘freezing
the dead’ is a misconception. The site advocates clinical trials to
further the science of cryonics, however sceptics will find a variety
of links to explore and may find it interesting to read a pro-cryonics
view.
For Travellers
http://www.dfat.gov.au/travel/mature_travellers.html
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade explains that
they single out out the senior traveller due to the fact
that post-retirement travellers are on the increase and have some special
needs. They provide a wealth of pertinent information from medication
and reciprocal health care arrangements to senior citizens cards.
There is travel advice, information on global issues, passports and
other relevant topics. This is a site well worth visiting for both the
experienced traveller and those tak-ing their first trip, with a focus
on assisting people to plan both a safe and healthy holiday.
Senior Links
www.dadhc.nsw.gov.au
The Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care aims to provide older
people, people with a disability and their families and carers: increased
access and opportunity to participate in community life, more flexible
and sustainable services and clearer access to the Department. There
are links to other departments such as the Seniors Information Service,
publications to download for free and a wealth of information including
upcoming events.
Unique Coffins
www.tascraft.com.au/FI
Final Indulgence is a business based in Tasmania that endeavours to
offer people a chance to be both imaginative and creative in their choice
of coffin. They make custom coffins in order to encourage a personal
approach to dying and to inject some individuality into the process.
Their coffins range from artist created to Australian Eco-Coffins to
coffins that can be used as furniture until they are needed, some suggestions
are a drinks cabinet or linen chest. The coffin interiors can be fitted
out with a variety of fabrics including silk pillows, hand felted wool,
leather or artificial fur. The site also offers links designed to illustrate
how simple it is to create a personalized and unique coffin.
