The NSW Breast Cancer Institute (NSW BCI) is
committed to ensuring that women and their
families who are at risk or have a diagnosis of
breast cancer receive the best advice, information,
treatment and holistic care. The work of the
NSW BCI is delivered through three Programs – Clinical
Care, Research and Education, and is made possible by the
support and generosity of the community.
In December 2003, we moved into our new Breast Centre
– the first purpose-built facility in Australia to deliver onestop-
shop services for breast cancer patients. Our Clinical
multidisciplinary model of service delivery brings together
the specialties of surgical oncology, radiology, radiation
oncology, medical oncology, pathology and cytology services,
counselling and lymphoedema treatment. We are
also committed to the adoption of advanced technologies
which improve patient care and provide platforms for
future advancements in diagnosis and treatment applications.
We have obtained the first second-generation Digital
Mammography System in the world for implementation in
our Breast Centre.
Our Research program has produced significant publications
in Australia about best-practice treatment, including
publications in international journals. The focus of our
research is predominantly applied clinical research about
breast cancer and its treatment, quality of life and epidemiological
screening issues.
We are committed to
the ongoing education
of health professionals
and consumers through
our Education program.
Strategies include breast
cancer Public Forums
satellite broadcast across
Australia. In 2004, the
Public Forum broadcast
live from Darling
Harbour, Sydney, to over
55 Australian communities. International and Australian
experts from the Leura V International Breast Cancer
Conference (hosted by the NSW BCI from 10–14 November)
discussed important issues on the diagnosis, treatment and
management of breast cancer.
