Home Memorials
A Unique Concept. BY ARTEMIS GOUROS

With approximately 128 000 total deaths and an average of 70 000 cremations per annum, Australia has a lot of ashes to account for. The question however, is what are people doing with their loved ones? Are the traditional options of scattering, mantelpiece urns, or crematorium and memorial park tributes the only choices? Definitely not. Thanks to an innovative company called Everlasting Garden Treasures, you can keep your loved ones at home in an original and dignified way with a vast range of outdoor memorial products. Scattering the ashes of a loved one is an irreversible act, with the backyard memorial concept you can keep your departed loved ones close to home forever or until you are ready to let them go. Mark Thomas, of Everlasting Garden Treasures, says he can’t count the number of times he’s heard “I wish I had known…”

The idea Over ten years ago, a gentleman by the name of Bob Crook came up with the prototype of the Everlasting Urn. Driven by the desire to memorialise his wife in a unique and meaningful way, Mr Crook was also planning to leave Sydney and was concerned with the issue of distance. As a solution to these difficulties, the home memorial concept was born and Mark Thomas, a businessman with a background in landscape design and construction, became involved. Today, Everlasting Garden Treasures, run by Mark Thomas, is based in Tuggerah, NSW and has clients across the entire country with their products also in demand overseas.

The products The Everlasting Urn can be placed in a range of stone or stone-like plinths; the combination provides a secure and stately upmarket memorial. The Bearmorial is very popular with families that have suffered the loss of a child and houses a stainless steel remains canister within. The memorial Marker features a floral vase and choice of plaque and emblem with a painted stainless steel vase for flowers. The Double Companion Memorial offers adjoining placement.

Location, location, location! The beauty of these products is the fact that they can be relocated. For instance if Mum has Dad in the yard, when she passes on the kids can relocate thememorial to their own home if they wish or choose to scatter the ashes. Another advantage is that elderly people do not have to take long bus trips to memorial parks and if they move into retirement villages, they can easily take their outdoor memorial with them. Choosing a suitable resting place for a loved one is a very personal and often difficult decision, now made easier with the availability of home memorial products. A versatile, simple, self-contained memorial, the Everlasting Urn is suitable for a traditional memorial park garden. However it also offers memorialisation in a quiet corner of the home garden creating a ‘comfort zone’ for grieving friends and family. Aesthetically pleasing and non-intrusive, the Everlasting Garden Treasures products are a wonderful way to cherish your loved ones.
