GOLFING AUSTRALIA
Pride of Perth
There’s world class golf in the west.
By Thomas E. King
The crown jewel among Perth’s many great golf havens, the 27-hole layout at the Joondalup Resort Country Club, has been described as “simply one of the most inspiring courses on the globe”. Recognised as Australia’s #1 Public Access Course in 2002 and Australia’s #1 Resort Course in 2003, Joondalup is unlike any other golf getaway in the country.
Designed by high profile golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr, the green playground features three
distinctive 9-hole courses. Each has its own special character. On certain holes the well manicured fairways sweep past stands of eucalypts in a picturesque bush landscape. On other holes, play is on links-like fairways while some holes provide unexpected challenges in navigating a former limestone quarry.
Unless it’s a weekend when the popularity of this suburban star is put to the test kangaroos might be the only spectators to witness your fantastic hole in one!

Tucked away in a classy setting minutes from the white sandy beaches of Sunset Coast, a 25 minute drive north from central Perth and 1.5 km from the Joondalup train station (with complimentary
transfers available upon request) the course is an integral part of a stylish satellite city.
The project includes an upmarket residential community with some of the properties facing the innovative golf course and a swish 70 room resort hotel. While the wildflowers that dot the luxurious expanse are at their blooming best during spring other plants have been selected to show colour through the seasons.
Perth is an all year golf destination. Even during the November to February summer season when the mercury touches the high 30s, the heat is dry and there is often a
cooling afternoon breeze sweeping in from the Indian Ocean. As an added bonus the humidity found on the east coast is almost totally absent from Perth.
Play during the winter months is mild and often very pleasant with brilliant blue skies contrasting with the jade green of the fairways and the white sand of the bunkers. Admittedly it can be a little chilly in the morning but then there’s nothing better than a brisk game on the pristine surrounds of Perth’s pride.
