Play amid the Gold Coast woods. BY THOMAS E. KING
The spectrum of colour is vastly expanded at Robina Woods with the brown of possums, wallabies and squirrels and the white of some species of eucalypts adding to a kaleidoscope of hues and shades from more than 50 species of birds. Though Robina Woods is moments from ocean surf and just 12 km from the highrise hotels and late night attractions of Surfers Paradise you have the incomparable feeling of being in the very heart of the bush. This is exactly the impression that the design duo of Graham Marsh and Ross Watson wanted to achieve when they carefully crafted the par 71, 6070-metre-long playground through 65 hectares of undulating natural woodland.
The 18-hole course is definitely appealing with gracefully rolling fairways; over 60 000 native trees and shrubs that were planted before the course opened in 1990 and that supplement the existing enchanted forest; several waterfalls, streams and lakes and, of course, a menagerie of wildlife. The 1st hole combines both water and wildlife. A creek runs the length of the right hand side of this manicured fairway while the thickly wooded spot on the left is the secluded home of wallabies and skinks. At the 10th tee golfers are reminded of the cycle of life. A picture postcard perfect chapel located to the right of the grassy tee box is used to celebrate christenings, solemnise weddings and commemorate those who have played their final game.
