Adelaide Aces
Golf is a big appeal in SA’s cosy capital

While Adelaide is still
known as the ‘City of
Churches’ in some conservative
circles more
sporting residents living
in the cultured South Australian
capital hail it as a city of golf.
The title is well deserved because
there are around two dozen fields
of green within 30 minutes of the
renowned South Australian Museum
and the celebrated Art Gallery on
North Terrace.
Non golfers can potter around the exhibits in these grand buildings while you putt over the greens at one of the capital’s best known and most accessible pocket-pleasing golf courses, the City of Adelaide Golf Links. Located on a 75 ha. parklands plot at the edge of the CBD and managed by the Adelaide City Council, three courses, in fact, await the intrepid golfer.
The easiest of the trio and a field
of interest to those just taking up
the sport as well as those wanting to
improve their short game is an all par
3, 18 hole playground set next to the
tranquil Torrens River.
Advanced players demanding a
more complex game can try their skill
on the narrow par 69, 4534 metre North
Course and the par 71, 5880 metre
South Course. These sporty ‘twins’ are
ranked high on the roster of ‘best inner
city golf courses in Australia’.
The South Course’s 3rd hole with
its tree lined views of the Adelaide
skyline is a favourite among many
players. Others enjoy the panorama
of the Adelaide Hills seen beyond the
18th green on the North Course.
Well known as a picture-perfect rural
retreat dotted with storey book-like
villages, vineyards and fields of wildflowers
that blossom from September
through November, the Hills harbour a‘secret’ that I’m happy to share.
Though the Mount Lofty Golf Club
has welcomed golfers since 1925 it’s
perhaps one of the capital’s best kept
golf secrets because around 95 per
cent of players come from Adelaide
and the quaint townships scattered
throughout the Hills.
Set in the Piccadilly Valley and
ringed by several forested peaks the
very hilly and very green 18 hole paradise
ranks as the most picturesque
course in the state and one of the prettiest
in Australia.
